CSL’s Role During the Great Wars
CSL was a key contributor to the Allied war effort in both World Wars. During World War I, the young company sent at least 28 Great Lakes vessels across the Atlantic to carry essential cargo and personnel. In World War II, 15 CSL ships – roughly a quarter of its fleet – navigated submarine-infested waters from the Atlantic to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, supporting Allied operations despite significant risks and losses.
