Engineering ratings assist with general and specialized tasks withing the engineering team. They are also known as “unlicensed crew” though some positions require specialized certification.

An engine room rating is responsible for assisting the officer of the watch in the engine room and is supervised by them. They hold an engine room certificate and may perform a variety of tasks related to the operation of the engine room.

The ship’s electrician is responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of the ship's electrical systems and equipment. They report to the chief engineer and work closely with other members of the engineering team.

The head tunnelman on a self-unloading ship is responsible for supervising other tunnelmen and crew members in the operation and maintenance of the ship's self-unloading machinery. They report to the chief engineer and are accountable for the vessel's performance during the unloading process.

The tunnelman on a self-unloading ship reports to and follows the instructions of the head tunnelman. They assist with the preparation and testing of all gates before cargo loading, and ensure compliance with environmental management procedures.
