Requirements and Qualifications for Seafaring Positions at Canada Steamship Lines

Deck Positions

Ship Master
  • Must hold a Transport Canada Master Certification
  • Must hold a Marine Medical Certificate or Provisional Medical Certificate
  • Must have previous experience working as a Master
  • An asset to have previous experience working on self-unloading ships or bulk carriers
  • An asset to have previous experience working in the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence region, and East Coast of Canada
  • An asset to hold a Great Lakes Pilotage Authority Certification
First and Second Mate
  • Must hold a Transport Canada Marine Certification
  • Must hold a Marine Medical Certificate or Provisional Medical Certificate
  • Must have previous experience working as a licensed officer
  • An asset to have experience working on self-unloading ships or bulk carriers
  • An asset to have experience working in the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence region, and East Coast of Canada
Third Mate

MARINE COLLEGE OPTION 

  • Must hold a Nautical Science – Diploma of Technology from a recognized marine college in Canada. The diploma takes approximately four years to obtain with six academic terms and two to three sea phases (360 sea days onboard)
  • Must hold a Watchkeeping Mate certificate
  • Must hold a Marine Medical Certificate or Provisional Medical Certificate

RATING OPTION 

  • CSL offers a program to sponsor rating crew who are interested in obtaining a Watchkeeping Mate certificate.
Deck Ratings
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada
  • Must meet all Transport Canada requirements and hold a Seafarer’s Identity Document, a Marine Medical Certificate or Provisional Medical Certificate, and any required maritime training

Engineering Positions

Chief Engineer
  • Must hold a Transport Canada 1st Class Motor Certification
  • Must have experience working as a Chief Engineer
  • An asset to have experience working on self-unloading ships or bulker carriers
Second and Third Engineer
  • Must hold a Transport Canada Marine Certification
  • Must have experience working as a Marine Engineer
  • An asset to have experience working on self-unloading ships or bulker carriers
Fourth Engineer

MARINE COLLEGE OPTION

  • Must hold a Marine Engineering Diploma of Technology from a recognized marine college in Canada. The diploma takes approximately four years to obtain with six academic terms and two to three sea phases (180 sea days onboard)
  • Must hold a Fourth Class Motor Certificate
  • Must hold a Marine Medical Certificate or Provisional Medical Certificate

RATING OPTION

  • CSL offers a program to sponsor rating crew who are interested in obtaining a Fourth class Motor Certificate.
Engineering Ratings
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada
  • Must meet all Transport Canada requirements and hold a Seafarer’s Identity Document, a Marine Medical Certificate or Provisional Medical Certificate, and any required maritime training

StewarD Positions

Chief Cook, Second Cook
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada
  • Must meet all Transport Canada requirements and hold a Seafarer’s Identity Document, a Marine Medical Certificate or Provisional Medical Certificate, and any required maritime training
