Canada Steamship Lines’ (CSL) newest Trillium Class vessel, the Whitefish Bay, arrived in Superior, Wisconsin earlier today. Upon loading her first cargo she will commence her maiden voyage along the Great Lakes Northern Corridor to a transhipment facility in Quebec City.

City of Superior Mayor Bruce Hagen and Midwest Energy Resources Co. (MERC) President Fred Shusterich joined Dan McCarthy, CSL Vice President of Marketing and Customer Service, at the MERC terminal to celebrate the ship’s arrival. The voyage from Montreal marks the vessel’s first transit in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway system since completing her trans-Pacific voyage on July 9, 2013.

Midwest Energy is excited to participate in the first leg of the Whitefish Bay’s maiden voyage via the Northern Corridor to Europe, In our trade, we are especially excited about the advent of these new ships – the high caliber of these state-of-the-art vessels equates to increased efficiency and lower costs for our customers, all of which bodes well for continued export business.

The Whitefish Bay is the second of four new Trillium Class vessels to join CSL’s Great Lakes fleet. Conceived and built as part of CSL’s ambitious fleet renewal program, Trillium ships are equipped with the most advanced, sustainable and safe technologies available on the market today.

We built these ships to meet the evolving needs of our customers and the high environmental standards expected by the communities in which we operate. The Whitefish Bay and all Trillium Class vessels use less fuel, release fewer emissions and dust, and provide outstanding operational efficiency.

CSL’s significant investment in the Trillium fleet renewal program is a testament to the company’s commitment and confidence in the bright future for the shipping industry in the Great Lakes and Seaway.

“Shipping on the Great Lakes has been the cornerstone of our business for over 100 years,” said McCarthy. “As CSL celebrates its centennial year, we are very proud to be ushering in a new era for bulk cargo shipping with the most advanced and environmentally-friendly self-unloaders to sail on the Lakes.”
